Hello citizens

You have reached the home you never knew you had. A nerd(s) hangout, where nerds can be nerds and discuss/plan nerdy things. Usually this would be science and tech related stuff mixed with a bit of humour.

Several useful services are hosted here for use by a small group of people/nerds. The main reason to start this was to have a good discussion forum for conversations on (data) science. Initially this site was invite only. If you’re interested to join don’t hesitate and self-register at discourse. After all, there are still only a couple of Nerderlanders right now. Meanwhile please excuse the cringeworthy text and website. It is merely a placeholder for something better.

Join the MATRIX, take the red pill!

Jun 2, 2019

Finally there’s a possibility to chat directly on our own nerderlands.net server. After creating a synapse instance on our own host, we’re now part of the federated matrix universe. This is an open network for secure, decentralised communication.

Alibaba Open-Sources Mars to Complement NumPy

Jan 18, 2019

Alibaba Cloud recently announced that it has open sourced Mars — its tensor-based framework for large-scale data computation — on Github. Mars can be regarded as “a parallel and distributed NumPy.” Mars can tile a large tensor into small chunks and describe the inner computation with a directed graph, enabling the running of parallel computation on a wide range of distributed environments, from a single machine to a cluster comprising thousands of machines.

Some Useful Books

Dec 30, 2018

As useful background and reference material I have made some books available. The topics are Mathematics, Statistics, Probability, Data Science, Analysis and Python in general. These should not be viewed as recommendations by me though. It is just some useful material I thought I’d share. The link to the repository is available on the Discourse site.

Expired Certificate

Dec 30, 2018

Due to en expired SSL certificate this site was basically not accessible for a couple of weeks. I did not have time to look at it right away. This week I finally fixed it. There still is an issue with the email server though (DKIM related). This I expect to resolve quite soon as well.

Oct 18, 2018

Just in case you missed this piece of news. UCSD will offer an online Master of Data Science, subject to approval by The University of California, San Diego, the UC office of the President, and WSCUC.

Students that followed the online edX Micro Masters will get credit for this towards a full masters. This should create a lot of interest!

Collection Data Science resources/bookmarks

Oct 16, 2018

There is a lot of really interesting Data-Science related news published on the internet. It comes to us via various channels, like Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc. The Nerderlands will host a modest database where users/members can jointly collect relevant URLs (i.e. bookmarks). Because of its elegance and simplicity I have decided to go with a tool called buku It is up and running and is currently populated with a few interesting URL’s Have a look and add your own collection of bookmarks!

edX announcement

Sep 4, 2018

Hello fellow learners/students,

My name is Jan Rhebergen, electronics engineer / scientist with some experience in R&D,… and aspiring data scientist :)

I’m a verified learner and completed part of the courses needed for the MicroMasters. Due to overlap between the previous course I am now picking up where I left off earlier :) So you’ll see me around!

Together with some other fellow students, some of which have already completed the MicroMasters, we’ve formed a group on LinkedIn. The purpose is to stay in touch and discuss topics of mutual interest, mainly data science related.

Discourse self registration opened

Aug 30, 2018

It appears that some mail domains consider the discourse invites spam. In particular gmail.com and msn.com seem to be affected. Funny enough my own gmail account also considers mailing-list type of messages such as google’s own quora.com spam! (go figure)

Some history

Aug 26, 2018

In case you are wondering why this site came to be, here’s a little history. For the past year I have been immersed in the UC San Diego online MicroMasters as offered by edX. Some students connected on a LinkedIn group. These probably represent above average motivated students and those who engaged quite a bit in the edX discussion forum.

Welcome to The Nerderlands

Aug 25, 2018

Okay, just a short message that tells about the start of this website. First thing to mention is that is an amateur volunteer effort. Setting it up and tweaking is still ongoing so a little downtime here and there is to be expected. I have not extensively tested all functionality but as far as I can see all works more or less as expected.
